Why support Lemhi Regional Land Trust?

In 2005, a group of your friends, neighbors and fellow community members gathered to discuss the need for an organization dedicated to private land conservation in central Idaho.  With the goal of protecting the open spaces, working ranchlands and wildlife habitat that make our area unique, these forward thinking individuals began to take steps to create the organization you know today as Lemhi Regional Land Trust.  We are proud to say that six years later, we continue to be your locally founded, governed and staffed grassroots organization dedicated to ensuring private lands in central Idaho remain available for the next generation.

Since our inception, LRLT has successfully conserved 7,500 acres over six different ranches.  So what does this mean to you?  This means that these parcels of land will remain intact and continue to function as working lands, preserving the rural lifestyle we value in Lemhi County.  While we have access to various funding sources to protect these lands, project dollars do not cover all of the costs of keeping our doors open.  For that, we owe our success to you.  Your support allows us to take on new projects, steward our conservation easements and keep up with requests from interested landowners.

The past year has been a busy one for us here at LRLT, from welcoming new board and staff members to hosting our most successful annual barbeque yet, but most importantly, we protected three more Lemhi County ranches totaling 1,925 acres.  The Cole Ranch, Kenney Creek Ranch and Hayden Creek Ranch continue to function as working ranches while providing critical habitat for wildlife including deer, elk, great blue heron and Chinook salmon.

So what’s in store for 2012?  More acres conserved.  Currently we are working with several landowners interested in protecting their lands through conservation easements and ensuring it remains available for agriculture and wildlife habitat without the pressure of development.  More chances to interact with other conservation minded community members.  We’ve put our heads together and come up with a variety of events to be held throughout the year to give you a chance to learn more about what we do, tour our conserved properties and enjoy the beauty of our valley.

Six ranches and 7,500 acres and we couldn’t have done it without you, nor can we do it in the future.  We need your support.  Help us safeguard the valley we all call home.  Join us as we ensure a future for Lemhi County’s next generation of ranchers, protect vital wildlife habitat and guarantee our open spaces remain just that, open spaces.
